The Colonel's Picks for September 4th, 2013

Welcome to an extra long edition of the Colonel's Picks. Image was so generous with their two for one flipbooks this week, that I decided to pass the savings on to you! Big stuff is starting in all corners of the comic publishing-verse, so I hope you saved your sheckles.

The Star Wars #1 (Dark Horse)

Longer ago, in a galaxy even farther away, film icon George Lucas penned a rough draft for what would one day be the screenplay for Star Wars. This early version of the mythos now lives on as a Dark Horse series, thanks to J.W. Rinzler and Mike Mayhew. Follow the adventures of Annikin Starkiller and giant green alien Han Solo, as they try to defeat the Sith empire and master the Bogan. May the bogan be with you.

Batman: Black & White #1 (DC)

If you're not on board with the current Zero Year arc in Batman, or even if you aren't digging the whole New 52 at all, DC still has you covered. Alongside the return of Legends of the Dark Knight, comes this blast from the recent past. Batman: Black & White is an anthology of caped crusades sans color. Just listen to this line up and try to keep your five dollars to yourself: Chip Kidd, Michael Cho, Neal Adams, Joe Quiones, Sean Murphy, Chris Samnee! Hot damn, talk about soothing the pain brought on by the New 52. This is like opium for Bat-fans.

Forever Evil #1 (DC)

Evil forever and ever! After the events of Justice League #23 and the not-quite-ending of the Trinity War, the heroes of Earth are in dire straits. A threat from another world (a parallel world, in fact) clashes with Lex Luthor and his assembled team of villains. Bad guys fighting bad guys? Superman and company should just kick back and let them tucker each other out. Wait...the solicitation claims that the Justice League is dead! Darn you, writer Geoff Johns and artist David Finch, darn you to heck!

Codename Action #1 (Dynamite)

Cold War espionage action from Chris Roberson and former Green Hornet artist Jonathan Lau. The plot synopsis for this new series sounds like it came straight from my memoirs. A young secret agent is the free world's last line of defense against sinister forces that seek to "heat up" our conflict with the Soviet Union. I'll be scanning this one to check for accuracy. Let's see if Mr. Roberson and Mr. Lau can paint a realistic picture of the life of a spy. I was there, man.

Love Stories To Die For #1 (Image)

This one-shot from Image is a flip book containing two full length stories for the price of one. And you know how this old Colonel loves a bargain. One is set in the time of Vikings and another uses outer space as the backdrop. The creators Dirk Manning and Owen Giani may not ring a bell, but I'll consider this a stealth pilot for two possible new series. Let's see if either of them has what it takes to earn a permanent spot on the Colonel's weekly haul.

Chew #36 (Image)

Chew is a consistently great title, first recommended to me by the Club's own Evan Arnold. It's a little over three years later, and the story has taken many twists and turns that I do not wish to get into at this time. Let me just say, this should not be your first issue of Chew. Any issue but this one. If you have not reead Chew, put this down, and pick up the volume one trade paperback. If you are a longtime reader of Chew, this issue is huge for you. A "Do not miss" indeed. Let's just say Chew #36 is really more like issue #29 and a half and leave it at that.

X-Men: Battle Of The Atom #1 (Marvel)

The current X-Men brain trust of Brian Bendis, Jason Aaron, and Brian Wood combines forces to bring us the crossover event of the...month? Yeah, that sounds about right. Joking aside, this is the kind of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey tale that would make even The Doctor's head spin. The original five X-Men have been brought to the present and are now a headache for the students and teachers at the Jean Grey School. Now a group of X-Men from the future have arrived to warn the X-Men of the present that the X-Men of the past need to return to the past. It's simple really. Frank Cho provides the art, so at least this managerie will be pretty to look at.

Now that's a spicy meatball! Come back next week as a version of me from the future tries to assassinate a version of me from the past. Meanwhile, get into the holiday spirit as Evan Arnold's Halloween countdown rages on and the CoH Podcast nears its historic 50th episode! It's a veritable House of Ideas over here at the Colonel's Cabin!!

Cheers.
