The Colonel's Picks for September 11th, 2013

New and exciting releases from all across the publishing multiverse, dear reader! The only kid who didn't some out to play this week was DC, but that's what they get for being all evil and stuff this month.

Low Society #1 (Aardvark Vanaheim)

This one-shot by Rob Walton is a spoof on Dave Sim's legendary independent comic Cerebus, namely the political flavored arc High Society. Back in the day, Cerebus had his fun lampooning the popular comics of the time, and now it's his turn on the spit roast. And just to prove it's all in good fun, Mr. Sim himself is providing the cover.

Cyborg 009 HC (Archaia)

Archaia is taking the graphic novel route with their retelling of the Cyborg 009 saga. Shotaru Ishinomori's manga classic gets a facelift courtesy of F.J. DeSanto and Marcus To. The only question is if these new creators will do the source material justice, or will old school otaku riot in the streets?

Brain Boy #1 (Dark Horse)

Dark Horse continues to take the superhero genre by storm with this latest offering from Fred Van Lente and R.B. Silva. Brain Boys stars Matt Price, a powerful telepath who works for the U.S. secret service and solves problems that require more finesse than a cruise missile can provide. Dark Horse's recent superhero revival has had some real winners, so if the big two are leaving you cold, rest assured there's a great alternative!

Kings Watch #1 (Dynamite)

Public Domain Avengers Assemble! Like the Robot Chicken sketch brought to life, the heroes of Kings Watch fight evildoers but good in this pulpy style funnybook. The Phantom, Flash Gordon, and Mandrake the Magician team up once again to save the world from threats too obscure for more relevant heroes to face. All kidding aside, Jeff Parker and Marc Lanning will most likely do a bang-up job on this series, when you consider Parker's past on series like Marvel's Agents of Atlas.

Mars Attacks Judge Dredd #1 (IDW)

The IDW formula for creating awesome comics proves that I will definently dig this new limited series by Al Ewing, John McCrea, and Greg Staples. Little Green Men run afoul of the law in Mega City One, while Dredd has to contend with a cabal of criminal masterminds to boot. I'm sure the pages of this comic will be lined with gooey green bits of Martian brain by the time the Judges get through with them.

Eternal Warrior #1 (Valiant)

The Valiant comeback continues! Greg Pak and Trevor Hairsine bring Gilan Addi-Padda, the immortal, back to the present day and back to the battlefield after attempting to live a quiet life of solitude. After the lackluster return of Quantum & Woody just a month prior, the pressure is on for Valiant and Mr. Pak. Don't let the Valiant universe fade away again, fellas!

Captain America #11 (Marvel)

Follwing the loss of a longtime supporting character last issue, Cap hardly has time to mourn as yet another threat rears its ugly head. Fans of Frank Miller's Daredevil run will remember Nuke, the pill popping super soldier that nearly leveled Hell's Kitchen. It seems old Nuke has been unleashed on Manhattan once again, serving a new master. Joining series writer Rick Remender for this new arc is superstar artist Carlos Pacheco. Pacheco's been a mainstay in the world of comics for a while now, and it will be interesting to see how fans of Romita Jr.'s art from the last ten issues will respond to this change on the art chores. Better yet, I wonder if people who were turned away by Romita's art (they're out there, believe it or not) will come back.

That's a lot of comics. This old Colonel might have to take out a second mortgage to support this habit. Well kiddies, I'm gonna go sell some plasma and get ready for next week. Stay frosty.
