Salutations! Seeing as that behemoth Paula Deen has finally fled into winter hibernation (surely to lick her wounds and regenerate her many dangerous limbs), your dear old Colonel finally has time to read some quality comics. And what tickled my fancy this week, you ask?
Black Beetle: No Way Out #1 (Dark Horse)
Previously a feature in Dark Horse Presents, Francesco Francavilla's Black Beetle returns in his own mini-series from the fine folks at Dark Horse. Writer/artist Francavilla's style suits the pulpy nature of this hero and fans of The Black Coat already know superhero noir is right in his wheelhouse. After hitting up your comic shop this Wednesday, take a detour into Colt City why don't you.
Threshold #1 (DC)
This handy pamphlet nets you not one, but two amazing stories by comics veteran Keith Giffen set in the "cosmic" corner of DC's universe. The first is the story of a disgraced Green Lantern fighting to regain his honor spinning out of this month's Green Lantern: The New Guardians annual. The second (and the one that piqued the Colonel's interest) is a brand new story featuring fan favorite character and bearer of the Orange light of avarice, Larfleeze. DC has a had a tough time with their space-faring characters outside of the Lanterns, but the creative team gives me hope!
Bionic Man vs. Bionic Woman #1 (Dynamite)
The solicitation for this new mini-series by Keith Champagne and Ardian Syaf begs the question; will they be friends, lovers, or mortal enemies? Personally, dear reader, I hope we get an issue of each! TV's bionic couple-that-never-was Steve Austin & Jamie Sommers clash in what just might be the Colonel's premier pick. Here's hoping for a cameo by Sasquatch...
High Ways #1 (IDW)
Two words. One name. JOHN BYRNE!
Todd, The Ugliest Kid On Earth #1 (Image)
I wonder, Orvillites, will this be yet another quirky genre-bending bloo-blah from Image, or are writer Ken Kristensen and artist M.C. Perker going to blow us away? The premise (involving axe murderers, supernatural beasties, and crazed ex-soap opera stars) sounds interesting enough, but can they combine these elements into a coherent (or at least interesting) story? The Colonel picked this one based on the cover art alone.
I hope you'll excuse my overuse of the parenthesis punctuate this week, friends. In my day they were outlawed and a sentence could only end with a period or drawn steel. See you next week, and give my sincerest regards to your mother, who now rests her head on tear-soaked pillowcases knowing the Colonel will be spending his Wednesday nights with a stack of comic books.
Cheers.
