Greeting ghouls, I have yet another Halloween countdown post! This time, it has to do with a little pixelated game by Benjamin Rivers (Toronto based comic book artist and game designer) called Home.
Home is an atypical horror game in some respects. No axe-wielding murderers threaten you, there is exactly one jump scare, and the images you see won't haunt your sleeping hours. It is a relatively short experience, clocking in at around 45 minutes to
an hour to complete. Despite of all this, it may be one of the most
intense and suspenseful experiences you will put yourself through as a gamer.
The greatest strength of Home is the way the story unfolds. You wake up, alone in a seemingly abandoned house. You have no idea of how you got there, no idea of what the previous events were. You only know that you have to get back Home. Your decisions influence the story and create the twists in the path as you go along. Do you bother rifling through that file cabinet? How about picking up that blood caked knife? Even the smallest choice can influence what will become of the choices you make and how you come to perceive your own actions during the course of the game.
Afraid you might not like it? Don't have much cash? Not to worry! Home is available through Steam for the low, low price of three bucks. So give Home a spin, and invite your friends to too. After all in a 'make-your-own' adventure game half the fun would be in the telling, and in the telling, Home excels.
Until next time.
